Title

Two foreign nationals getting married in the Czech Republic

Basic information

Foreign nationals can get married in the Czech Republic in a civil or Church service.

A marriage is formed by the free and complete consensual declaration of a man and woman, who wish to be joined in matrimony (the engaged couple), that they are entering into a marriage agreement. The declaration is made publicly and in ceremonial form in the presence of two witnesses.

Who is entitled to apply?

  • the engaged couple
    • i.e. foreign nationals

How to apply

The engaged couple should first choose a provisional time and place for the wedding ceremony and then approach the registry office of the district in which the chosen location lies with an application for a wedding ceremony.

If one (or both) of the engaged couple does/do not speak or understand Czech, or if one (or both) of the engaged couple is/are deaf or unable to speak, the presence of an interpreter is necessary for the declaration of marriage. The presence of an interpreter is the responsibility of one of the engaged couple, at their own expense. In this case it is not possible to complete a declaration of marriage without the presence of an interpreter.
